課程概述

Course Description:
This course explores a variety of English writings, with emphases on the questions of critical thinking, rhetoric, and the role of university students in civil society. In addition to expanding your knowledge and perspectives of the world through the course materials, we aim to help the students to become more skilled and proficient readers and listeners in English. Our class consists of trainings in reading as well as listening, with about one third of our class hours devoted to the latter. The “textbook” here will be a collection of photocopied essays selected from different sources. Other course materials include a list of video clips, audio recordings, and additional handouts or online resources the teacher adds when necessary. Students are required to make use of the online learning system at NTU (called CEIBA) to post their responses to the readings, video and audio recordings, download some course materials, or hand in their homework.

課程目標
Course Objective:
The objective of this course is multiple: to enhance the reading skill and listening ability of non-English majors, familiarize them with more sophisticated uses of English, situate their readings in intellectual backgrounds, and develop their sensibility toward the English language and ability of critical thinking, which is essential to studies in all academic fields.

Course Materials and Tentative Schedule:

Readings: Students are expected to preview the reading(s) of the week before the scheduled classes meet. The teacher only requires that students gather the basic ideas—rather than every detail—of the readings before class, so that students can prepare themselves for more in-depth discussion in class (rather than know everything beforehand).
Please note that the following weekly schedule may be subject to change depending on the progress or needs of students.

Part I: Historical speeches and rhetorics
Week 1: Introduction to course objectives; “I Have a Dream”
Week 2: Continued discussion on “I Have a Dream”; “Letter from Birmingham Jail” (first assigned section)
Week 3: Continued reading of and discussion on “Letter from Birmingham Jail”
Week 4-5: Continued reading of and discussion on “Letter from Birmingham Jail”; “The Gettysburg Address”
Week 6: Continued discussion on “The Gettysburg Address”; research project* on the historical and social issues related the readings so far

Part II: Environmental concerns:
Week 7-8: Readings (in English) and discussions on preserving the wetlands in central Taiwan
Week 9: Research project on the environmental significance of wetland preservation

Part III: Civil Disobedience
Week 10-11: Introduction to the idea; Henry David Thoreau’s essay on civil disobedience (an edited version)
Week 12-13: Readings (in English) and discussions on the seizure of farmlands in central Taiwan
Week 14-15: Readings and discussions on the Occupy Wall Street Movement

Part IV: Concluding notes on the issues at stake
Week 16-18: Group presentations on the main issues related to the readings

* A research project involves both new findings relevant to the topic at hand and written responses to the readings based on your findings.

Listening:
Listening materials include the audio recording of the “I Have a Dream” speech; discussions of related issues from NPR radio programs (http://www.npr.org/); selected Seinfeld episodes

Requirements and Grading:
Your final grade will be calculated according to the following breakdown:
Written responses 30%
Final group presentation 30%
Quizzes 25%
Participation (including attendance and participation in group discussions): 15%
